 Wireless Internet Access

How does it work?
We provide you with high speed Internet through the air, no wires required. The transmitter at your house communicates through the air with one of our access point towers, which are directly connected to Upperspace’s Internet backbone. Since no phone lines are required, you won’t be charged any “line” charges from the phone company. No more waiting for an open phone line. No more busy signals. No more waiting for the modem to dial up. It’s always connected and ready to use!

What is required?
All you need is a computer with a network port “aka Ethernet port” and Line of sight to one of our access point towers. Upperspace provides the rest! A FREE site survey conducted by Upperspace will determine what type of wireless equipment needed.

Can I get wireless Internet service at my house; I live way out in the sticks?
Almost certainly. Unlike DSL and Cable Internet, our wireless service works ANYWHERE that has line of sight to one of our access point towers. We have several access point towers online that are ready for customers to use and we’re constantly adding new towers. You can check our coverage map located at www.upperspace.net to see if your inside our coverage area.

Can I use my laptop that has wireless capability to connect to your service?
Yes, But….  You can certainly use your laptop with our service, but you will need a wireless router in your house if you want connected wireless.  Our wireless service is designed to deliver high speed Internet from our tower to your house wirelessly, and then from the transmitter we install on your house, we run a standard Cat5 Ethernet cable to a router or directly to your computer. If you want wireless connectivity to your laptop or other computers you can use a wireless router. We do NOT recommend using a wireless router due to the fact it may interfere with the wireless service we deliver to your house. Hardwired LAN connections are best.

What is line of sight?
That means the antenna at your house needs to be able to see the antenna on one of our towers. Our towers are tall and generally can see over any trees in this area, the issue will be if you have tall trees or buildings close to your house that blocks your line of sight to our towers. Request a FREE site survey. We’ll come out with portable test equipment and confirm whether your location will work with our wireless service or not.

Will all my Internet applications work?
Yes, all normal Internet applications should work great with our wireless Internet service. Online games usually work well with our service, as the ping times are usually less than 100ms to most places on the Internet. We supply private IP addresses with our normal wireless packages. If you need a public IP to host servers with, we have business packages available.

How fast is it?
It’s fast, REAL fast! We offer different packages, with different levels of service. The fastest speed currently offered is 2048kbs (2Mbs). The average dialup user connects at 28.8kbs or less with their modem. Our fastest service (2mb) is about 73 times faster then a modem connection. Below are some speed comparisons between our wireless internet service and the average dialup modem speed.

512kbs wireless internet is about 18 times faster than dialup
1Mbs wireless internet is about 36 times faster than dialup
2Mbs wireless internet is about 73 times faster than dialup

I noticed the upload speed is less then download speeds. Why?
Most broadband services offer higher capacity download speeds than they offer upload. You’ll find this with DSL, Cable, Wireless, and even 56k dialup. There are several reasons for this. I’ll touch on a few of the reasons and how this really affects you on our wireless service.

Traffic flows much smoother from the Internet provider to the user (download) than it does the other way (upload). Too many users trying to send large amounts of data back to the central access point at the same time can cause a traffic jam. Because of this, upload speed is less than download speeds to try to prevent these traffic jams from occurring. Over 90% of a normal user’s traffic is download traffic, so this really doesn’t affect the performance of your connection. Upload traffic is only generated by requests sent to download web pages, sending e-mail, etc. All of these items generate very light upload traffic, which would not be “slowed” by our upload speed capacity. Our services have a 128kbs to 256kbs upload speed, which is more than plenty for normal Internet use. It’s over 8 times  as fast as a modem at uploading!

Are your wireless Internet speeds guaranteed?
Our non-business plan speeds are not guaranteed. Let me explain this. All wireless Internet services use shared media. Shared media means all users share whatever bandwidth is available. Our network has been engineered and maintained so that there is always plenty of available bandwidth, but it is possible during peak usage hours parts of our networks could hit maximum capacity for brief periods of time. That means you may not always be able to get the full amount of bandwidth your plan includes, but you will still have fast useable Internet access during those times. Another consideration is that there is always some “overhead” in any network. The overhead in wireless is collision control packets and re-transmission packets. These can use up to as much as 10% of your bandwidth. This is minimal, but should be noted when looking at MAX bandwidth throughput. We are very conscious of the performance of our networks and plan to keep the performance very good on our wireless networks.

What about reliability?
Like other broadband services our wireless service can be affected by weather, especially thunderstorms with lightning. For the most part rain will not change the performance of your connection. Your Internet should continue to work through even the heaviest downpours. With 15 years of ISP experience, we have a very good record with almost no downtime in our Internet services and plan to keep it that way.

What makes Upperspace’s wireless network better?
We built our wireless network literally from the ground up, using the latest in technology and equipment. We spent countless hours engineering everything to work reliably and at peak performance. Unlike other providers we OWN most of our towers and network! That means we have full control over our network, we’re not at the mercy of anyone for access to our equipment and can make any changes or repairs whenever we need to.

We’re locally owned and operated in Pryor, Oklahoma. When you call, you talk to someone in Pryor, if you need someone to come out and fix a problem, they will be dispatched from our Pryor office, which is currently less than 20 minutes from anywhere we provide service!

Our goal is to provide you with the fastest, most reliable, wireless broadband Internet access available.
